D. Lowe and Pedro Love Reporters

No, Larry Didn't make the national list,
but is near the top of our sh...ort list...

Santa's Naughty List
"The culprit: Fox Sports Net West reporter Carolyn Hughes.
The crime: Was taken off the Dodgers coverage in July after the swirling rumors became reality - she was having a relationship with Dodgers pitcher Derek Lowe.
The floodgates finally opened when a media watchdog Web site,, reported the affair with compromising photographs. Lowe's wife, Trinka, contacted the team and FSN to inform them of the conflict of interest, among other things.
According to Fineman, Trinka Lowe also confronted Hughes after suspecting there was something afoot and posed the question: 'Do you think this is an appropriate and professional relationship?' To which Hughes responded, according to Trinka, 'Yes I do ... There is no crime.'
The aftermath: FSN threw up a smokescreen, saying Hughes would continue to host 'FSN Across America' in September, but that show was never renewed. The network still has not officially suspended or fired her.
While Hughes and Lowe continue to be seen together at Lakers and Clippers games, it hasn't stopped other athlete-reporter relationships from becoming public.

New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez recently announced his engagement to ESPN Deportes reporter Carolina Cruz, although the network claims she no longer works for them. Indy 500 winner and IRL champion Dan Wheldon has also gone public with dating Nicole Manske, a sportscaster at WISH-Channel 8 in Indianapolis. "

Mets Closer To getting Manny
"Ramirez seems poised for a trade. Just last week he asked one of his former handlers in Cleveland to join him in New York, if and when a trade finally happens. The friend, who asked to remain anonymous, said Sunday: 'Manny's first choice is still Anaheim, because he feels he could play there without fans bothering him too much. He walked around the malls there and no one noticed him. He liked that.
He's not crazy about New York, but he said he would go there if that was the only way to get out of Boston. He's just fed up with people bothering him all the time, showing up at his house.'"

Beckett 'pumped' about joining Red Sox

Beckett On The Conference Call:
"Josh Beckett would love jersey No. 21, but the newest member of Boston's starting rotation knows the Red Sox might not hand over Roger Clemens' old number.
'I'm going to wear whatever they give me,' Beckett said when asked about his boyhood idol and fellow Texan. 'It would definitely mean something to me.'

The Emperor May At Least Wear A Toga
John Henry pulls back the curtain on Sons Of Sam Horn Website

"It is virtually impossible to stop leaks in Washington or in sports. The promise of anonymity eliminates accountability and makes it impossible to “discipline” anyone. The Plumbers were formed to plug leaks in the White House. Witch hunts can be more damaging than leaks."

-John W. Henry

"Q-Who was the one that did not want the Bigbie deal to go through?

JWH-Me! You probably think I’m joking, but unlike the media, I was there."
-Red Sox owner John Henry to a SOSH poster

Henry Continues About "meddling" and the Colorado debacle:
"In short, the external speculation about “meddling” within the Red Sox is misguided and Theo would be the first to agree with me. Theo made the baseball decisions. Were there instances where he didn’t do a deal based on questions we asked or opinions he received? Probably. Almost certainly. We value each others’ opinions. Part of what a GM does is weigh everything associated with transactions. In the Colorado deal late one night I called Theo with questions about that deal in comparison to the one the we actually ended up doing. I preferred the one we did. I didn’t want to give up prospects when we had a comparable alternative that involved paying dollars in lieu of prospects. It was that simple and that innocent. How Larry or anyone else got the blame – I have not a clue. What I didn’t know at the time was that Colorado made a trade thinking I was going to rubber stamp it that night, because that is usually what happens. It’s never been reported that I stepped into the middle of that. I wrote a note of apology to Josh over it, but Larry received the blame in the following days in the media. Then Theo took responsibility a few days later but the stories still continue about it."
-Q&A With Red Sox owner John Henry

"Manny is not returning to Boston. Manny is living through a difficult situation (in Boston) that only he and his family know and he no longer wants to play there."

-David Ortiz to the A.P., Dominican Republic

The Headless G.M. Gets It Done

Maybe the boys aren't leaving town to join Byrnes(right) after all...

Sources: Red Sox, Marlins have tentative deal
This move by Hoyer/Cherington/Woodfork/Shipley...and of course Lucchino, shows a committment to winning now, rather than cutting payroll as has been rumored. LL bashing aside, We have to give credit where credit's due. This deal makes it more than likely that the new G.M. is Hoyer or Cherington, as the foursome is obviously able to get things done, and next season's blueprint is likely already in place.

Wilder Tells Debt Loaded Sox Owners What They Want To Hear:
"They have a number of players that are really close and they have some players that are a year or two away, which would allow you to supplement a couple of players each year in the big leagues, which creates an opportunity to also free up salary."
-Red Sox G.M. candidate Dave Wilder

Cubs to Nomar: Go out and 'find a better fit'
Let us be very clear: Nomar and Boston are once again a toe-tappingly-good fit.
Red Sox Nation was divided on the 2004 departure of Nomah, and have since been enlightened of the ways of Evil Emporer Larry Lucchino. The Red Sox could pull a slick p.r. move and please a majority of their fan base by bringing back the Charlestown lifesaver. Nomar proved with the Cubs that he could play a solid third base, would be dynamite at first(see Paul Molitor), and is athletic enough to play the outfield.
His offensive production would likely still surpass that of Johnny Damon, at a huge bargain basement discount.

Tribune On Nomar's Future: " Nomar Garciaparra isn't gone yet, though he's one step out the door. 'If there was ever any possibility, it would be in the outfield,' Hendry said. 'In his best interests he needs to look around and see what the other possibilities are at the infield positions he might want to play instead of taking a gamble playing outfield.' Garciaparra's agent, Arn Tellem, has talked to the Orioles, who have a shortstop in Miguel Tejada and a third baseman in Melvin Mora. Garciaparra would have to play first or the outfield for the Orioles. The Los Angeles Angels may want Garciaparra as a third baseman, but their priority now is signing free agent Paul Konerko."

-Nomar Garciaparra Hub

Lucchino: Just a Soul Who's Misunderstood - New York Times:
"'When you made a move you had to justify why you were making it. First of all, what are the financial implications of the move? You had to be prepared. You didn't go to Lucchino shooting from the hip and say I want to do this. It didn't matter if it was a waiver claim. You had to be able to justify what you wanted to do. If it was something you felt strongly about, he would test you and test you."

Henry Hunted On A Hot Dog Safari

"I'm sick over the Theo Epstein thing. John Henry is better than the Yawkeys, but anyone would be. Half the world thinks Boston is racist because of the Yawkey family. Larry Lucchino is in and out of the State House like it's his own house. He has kicked out street vendors and added $275 seats to a ballpark that is a dump. Instead of a bar in right field, why don't they get Budweiser to give money to fix playgrounds in Boston?"
Andelman continues, "Has anyone ever checked into John Henry's business practices? These guys developed Epstein's skills and he was ready to lead the team for the next 25 years, now they are killing him."
-Eddie Andelman

Sox Try To "Bend It Like Beckett"

Red Sox 3 Ring Circus trying to deal for Beckett
Price of Hanley Ramirez and Lester may be to high, but the Sox certainly have the money to take on Mike Lowell's remaining 2 years and $18 million deal...Mike Lowell is still an above average 3rd baseman, and could play first if Youkilis is handed the 3b job.

"Mets near Cameron deal; Delgado next?

I Can Still Smell The Hot Dogs Coming Through The Radio

Andelman Swipes Back At Ordway-Sox Owners, And Of Course Larry Lucchino:
"Eddie's epilogue
Eddie Andelman broadcast his final AM 1510 program from the Soldiers Home, Rt. 16 in Chelsea, Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. Fittingly, Andelman used his last day on the 1510 airwaves to help others. Governor Mitt Romney was be a guest as Andelman raised money for the Soldiers Home.

Former 'Diehards' Anthony Pepe and Jon Anik sat in with Andelman. No phone calls were taken on the show, and Andelman encouraged people to come to the remote broadcast and contribute anything from monetary donations to phone cards, hats, t-shirts and books for the soldiers.

'This is the last stop in a series of veterans' homes,' says Andelman. 'We've already gone to Bedford, West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. These guys are the real heroes, not Manny Ramirez. I was never able to serve my country, so this is my way of doing that. The world has gone crazy with athletes as role models. Athletes don't even like the fans. These veterans don't have money to make phone calls or enough clothes. How does this happen? It's a national disgrace.'

Andelman is candid in discussing his time at AM 1510, 'The Zone was good to me. I left WEEI over moral issues. There is room in Boston for two or three sports stations, but AM 1510 never had a good morning show and you can't have a station without that. I am going to use all my contacts to help the Zone guys get other jobs.'

Former 'Diehard' Ryen Russillo, who had a couple of on-air run-ins with Andelman, is included in the veteran radio host's good will. He states, 'If our conversations came across as anything more than debate, I am sorry. Ryen is the hardest-working guy I've ever been around. He does more pre-show work than anyone I've met in the business. He's tremendous.'

Andelman says he told AM 1510 last..."

We Told You So...

It Never Was About The Money Callahan:
"Gerry Callahan said of Theo Epstein, "He's a hero. He's a god." Funny, at one time, Garciaparra and Martinez were both of those things in Boston, too. Things change when the contracts are up. Larry Lucchino has been accused of initiating a "smear campaign" against Epstein. Well, turnabout is fair play.
While Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino gets most of the blame, Epstein did nothing to stop a smear campaign against Garciaparra. Why is Nomar getting injured so much? Look how big he's gotten! He turned down $60 million over four years! "

Defending Jim Bowden (2002-08-08)

More Jim Bowden Skeletons:
"Not to excuse Bowden for having quite a way with words, but it should be evident to anyone who closely follows the Reds that this man's life is beset with disturbing problems, the majority of which are his own making. Bowden has given himself almost entirely to a demanding job with minimal prospects for success because Reds ownership couldn't care less about winning. He's allowed baseball to consume him, to no likely good end, and he's clearly lost his way.
Because of his consumption and frustration, Bowden has lost touch with the big picture. His family life, of which he was once quite proud, is a shambles. He's going through a messy public divorce painted in scandalous colors. The media is floating that his wife, Amy, is going out with Reds minority owner Bill Reik, who has emerged as one of Bowden's public critics.
Of course, by his brash, opportunistic antics, Bowden has been making critics and enemies for at least his 10 years as the Reds GM, leaving himself particularly susceptible to a feeding frenzy. "

Red Sox Hub Flashback-Bowden Bungles

Reds GM sorry for remarks:
'If players want to strike, they ought to just pick Sept. 11, because that's what it's going to do to the game. If they (the players) do walk out ... I encourage all of them, Make sure it's Sept. 11th. Be symbolic about it. Let (union head) Donald Fehr drive the plane right into the building, if that's what they want him to do,'
-Jim Bowden, referring to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
Hub Prediction: Jim Bowden will not be named Red Sox G.M.
-Red Sox Hub

Bowden and Lucchino, TNT and Kerosine

Starring The Boston Media As The Match:
"At the Reds' winter organizational meetings sometime in the middle 1990s, General Manager Jim Bowden challenged the scouts with the names of premier hitters from the early 1990s -- names like Jeff Bagwell, Robin Ventura and Frank Thomas. Bowden asked his scouts a tough question: 'What do all these guys have in common?'
'They're All-Stars,' one replied.
'They're all .300 career hitters,' came another response.
Bowden knew all along he wouldn't hear the right answer from this group.
'You guys said they couldn't play for us,' he spat back at the scouts.
That moment is Jim Bowden in a nutshell, dynamic and indelicate, alert and alienating. But also making a worthwhile point. "

Dynsfunction Junction-Out Of Town/Touch Owners Never Learn...May Cost Sox Damon

Sox Reportedly Low Ball Damon
Don't these clowns get it? Offering Damon a 3 year $24 million deal is a waste of time, as Boras is seeking a 5-7 Year deal at $12 million annually, while his market value likely caps out at $10-11 million annually for 4-5 years. Sox should get it over with and offer Johnny a 4 year, $40-45 million take-it-or-leave-it offer...then move on.

Matsui Plays For The New York Spankees

TIME Magazine: Asian Heroes - Hideki Matsui:
" Instructed to stay in the team dormitory and refrain from dating during the first several years of his career, so as to devote all his concentration solely to baseball, Matsui agreeably complied, without so much as a whimper. Indeed, his only eccentricity, if it can be called that, is his extensive private library of adult videos. His refreshing ability to laugh self-deprecatingly about his porno collection, reporters say, is one reason why fans and even nonfans have taken to him so much. Says former reporter Isao Hirooka: 'Hideki just wants to be like ordinary people."

If the Sox could land both Johnny Damon and Ron Jeremy Matsui in free agency, they could have both "The Pimp and The Porn King" at the top of their lineup, looking to score...

Vasquez Javys D'Backs By The Baseballs

Javier Vazquez files trade demand

Can Leaderless Red Sox Take Advantage??
The four headed Red Sox G.M. machine should hook up with their old 5th wheel-Arizona G.M. Josh Byrnes. A Clement for Vasquez swap makes sense for both teams, as the snakes have to deal Javier by March, and Clement also appears to need a smaller market. Although Vasquez had a poor 2nd half of 2004 for the Yankees, he was a dominant All-Star in the first half, is only 29 years old, and, unlike Matt Clement, has been a #1 caliber starter in the past. Javy has one less year remaining on his deal (2 years-$23 million remaining) than does Clement, so the deal makes sense for the Sox from a fiscal standpoint as well. A deal involving David Wells should be considered as plan B, although Arizona would likely want a prospect, or an expanded deal.
