Defending Jim Bowden (2002-08-08)
"Not to excuse Bowden for having quite a way with words, but it should be evident to anyone who closely follows the Reds that this man's life is beset with disturbing problems, the majority of which are his own making. Bowden has given himself almost entirely to a demanding job with minimal prospects for success because Reds ownership couldn't care less about winning. He's allowed baseball to consume him, to no likely good end, and he's clearly lost his way.
Because of his consumption and frustration, Bowden has lost touch with the big picture. His family life, of which he was once quite proud, is a shambles. He's going through a messy public divorce painted in scandalous colors. The media is floating that his wife, Amy, is going out with Reds minority owner Bill Reik, who has emerged as one of Bowden's public critics.
Of course, by his brash, opportunistic antics, Bowden has been making critics and enemies for at least his 10 years as the Reds GM, leaving himself particularly susceptible to a feeding frenzy. "
