Without a doubt, finding or developing a consistent all-star caliber shortstop is no easy feat. They are sadly few and far between. What the prior diatribe elucidates is not the inability to recognize talent, (have we also forgotten about Hanley Ramirez?), it is simply the inability to HOLD ON to it. This position is not only one of the toughest defensive positions, but one which most clubs, especially big money A.L. clubs, want some substantial offensive production from. And there are few players unfortunately that can deliver both. Can't we convert an all-star third baseman, a younger one, to be an all-star shortstop considering the shortage? At least, can't we HANG ON to one for awhile anyway...?
