- He was offered more than 5 years and $60 million by the Yankees, but chose the higher AAV 4 year deal, thinking that he may be able to get a 2 year deal after that.
- He was offered a 6 year deal by another club.
- Offers of 5 years and more than $60 million were on the table from other clubs.
- He tried his best to stay in Boston, but the Red Sox didn't try hard enough to sign him.
