Red Sox Hub Trade Rumors: I Don't Wanna Be A Pirate-MLB trade deadline approaches:
"The Pirates have five potential free agents on their roster in left-handed starter Mark Redman, right-handed relievers Brian Meadows and Jose Mesa, first baseman Daryle Ward and right fielder Matt Lawton.
Of those five, Lawton appears to be the only one in which the Pirates have no interest in retaining beyond this season. The 33-year-old, who is making $7.75 million despite having seemingly no instincts on the field or basepaths, would prefer to play with a contender as he has yet to appear in a playoff game in his 11-year career."
Theo Epstein has dealt with Littlefield and the Pirates at the deadline in the past: See Suppan and Sauerbeck.
Mesa, Meadows, and Redman would all be useful to the Red Sox and could be acquired for cash and 2nd tier prospects. A Deal involving a Payton for Lawton swap could also persuade the Pirates to part with some pitching, as it would allow the small market Bucs to save some dough to sign a free agent or retain Redman. -The Hub
