STAT GEEK TIME
2005 Deals:
Nomar:Guaranteed $8 million-Incentives(Plate appearances) could bring deal to $11 million.
Walker: $1.75 Million; Team option for 2006 of $2.75 million
Renteria: Guaranteed $10 million; Guaranteed $40 million over 4 years.
Bellhorn: Guaranteed $2.75 million for 2005.
THINK THE RED SOX HAVE A "POSITIONAL" BUDGET???
Bottom line: Both the Cubs and Red Sox have committed $12.75 million to their middle infield tandem for 2005.
Cubs have $0 committed for 2006 and beyond; Red Sox have $30 million committed (Renteria).
Based on a conservative comparison of the last 3 years, which of includes Nomar's injury riddled part-time 2004 season, Renteria's career 2003 year, and does not include any of Nomar's best years), the Cubs win on both flexibility and production.
NEXT UP: we will compare an average full season.
