"After a falling-out with the other Padres’ owners in 2001, which led to his selling his interest in the team,Lucchino worked briefly for Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. He was attending a Yale football game that fall when Florida Marlins’ owner John Henry called and asked about the sale of the Red Sox. When Lucchino said that he and the other members of his potential ownership group were looking for another investor, Henry asked to join.
